The Bold and The Beautiful

Adios, Liam? Plus, We Have Big Questions About Next Week’s Forrester Fashion Show!

This week’s episodes of Bold & Beautiful came dangerously close to being a parody of a soap opera thanks to Brooke’s hypocrisy, Sheila and Luna’s wildly inappropriate behavior and the typically repetitive dialogue.

Liam’s Last Dance?

How is nobody concerned about the MIA Liam? Sure, Bill was furious with his son when last they spoke, but does he really seem like the kind of guy to let a wound heal over?

No way, he’d totally have confronted Liam, asking if he’d yet seen the error of his ways. Hope mentioned that Liam hadn’t called her or Beth lately, but didn’t seem wildly concerned.

It seemed pretty obvious that the week was going to lead up to Liam trying to attend the father/daughter dance, which was discussed more than anything fashion related… which is odd, given that next week, the show is throwing a major fashion show!

Anyway, I should have guessed that they wouldn’t spend the money to stage a full-blown dance. Instead, Steffy whipped a disco ball out of the kitchen cupboard — despite that kitchen being so small it couldn’t house a decent food processor — so a touque-wearing Liam could boogie with his offspring.

I hope it wasn’t supposed to be some big surprise that Liam has an inoperable brain tumor, ’cause they revealed that in last week’s promo. Let’s see a show of hands… who thinks Liam will actually die? I have a sneaking suspicion that Bridget and Finn will pull the same basic miracle they did when Eric was dying last year.

Is There a Designer In the House?

So apparently, next week’s episodes will center around a Forrester fashion show. But what I’m wondering is… who designed this collection and when? I ask this, because I was suddenly struck on Thursday by an odd thought: Despite being set in the fashion industry,

Bold & Beautiful currently features more doctors than designers. Bridget was inexplicably wandering the hospital hallways despite living… elsewhere (it’s a little unclear where), joining employees Grace, Li and Finn to pronounce Liam a dead man walking.

Designer-wise, only Ridge and Zende are currently working, with Eric basically retired and Hope unemployed. Steffy makes important decisions, and Brooke… er… inspires people? There’s been next to no talk of fashion lately — especially when compared to the jewelry or perfume lines. Yet next week, voila! We’re hitting the runway.

I know I’m not alone in missing the days when Forrester’s fashions were competing against those from another house. Can we please, please, please have a ticked Hope start a competing line?

Dying Is Easy, Comedy’s Hard

I’m genuinely appalled by the way they’re writing Luna and Sheila. Sometimes, this show decides to just ignore a character’s rather unfortunate past in order to forge ahead with story. But in this case, we are reminded on a near daily basis that Luna is a double murderer. Yet I guess we’re supposed to find it charming when Sheila and her granddaughter exchange “witty” banter about this?

LUNA: I did frame [my mother] for murder.

SHEILA: Yeah, well, we all make mistakes.

Then there’s Sheila encouraging Luna to do whatever it takes to land her man even as the two of them talk about their desire to prove worthy of being in Finn’s life. And don’t get me started on that ridiculous food fight. I said it at the beginning of this column, but it bears repeating: Unless we’re now doing a full-blown parody of a soap, let’s stop writing such juvenile antics… especially when one of those engaged in the tiramisu tossing is was one of daytime’s most iconic baddies.

Random Thoughts…

Deacon Hope B&B

• I picked up a new phrase this week when Hope said her dad “didn’t come over to hear me trauma dump.” I’ll definitely be using that down the line. That said, I nearly choked on my coffee when Hope said, “Let’s recap.” Honey, no. The last thing anyone in the audience wants is more recapping!

• Where, exactly, does Luna live? And how is she affording her ever-changing fashionable wardrobe? At one point, Sheila said she would help her grandchild find a place to stay, but far as we know, that never happened. Oh, maybe Luna is staying with the mysterious monied friend of Sheila’s. You know, the one she mentioned quite often before hooking up with Bill. Man, this show is in need of a continuity editor.

• Are we not supposed to notice when Brooke goes from throwing herself at Ridge to ripping into Daphne for hitting on Carter? Unlike Ridge, who is now with Taylor, Carter is for all intents and purposes a free man, having been dumped by Hope.
